Example 1 of an implant placement to replace this front tooth #8 with Dr. Greg Friedman
Example 2 of a new patient we saw this week in the office with several implants including front teeth, #8, & #9
Often patients call our practice asking, “How much do you charge for dental implants”? We, for the very reason illustrated in the two radiographs above do not quote fees over the phone. My best advice to patients seeking a dental professional for minor or extensive dentistry is to do your research.
Do not just make your decision strictly from a quoted cost you received over the phone. Experience does matter when it comes to dentistry. From the materials used to the education of the dentist. Just because a dentist claims to be a specialist for a particular procedure does not mean they are. As proven in the above second radiograph completed by a “dental implant specialist”. Use your online resources wisely. Sites such as Yelp & Google are great tools to research a dentist and his/her practice. But buyer beware! “Just the other day I saw a “dental implant specialist” that had two Yelp accounts. One with 2.5 stars and right next to it a new Yelp account under a different name with 5 stars for the same “dental implant specialist”, stated Dr. Friedman. Both accounts do show next to each other when searching this particular practice. This for example is something to be aware of and notice.
Our patient above has not or will not ever need a removable “flipper” or appliance at all during his implant process unlike other practices. This puts our patients at ease and comfortable while going through the implant process. At Mod Squad Dental, not only are our doctors looking for the implant placement to be functional but also aesthetically pleasing as if it were a real tooth.
If you have questions about replacing missing teeth or dental implants, call Mod Squad today for your complimentary consultation…
Because experience does matter!!!

Dr. Friedman would like to introduce a new bright smile that will be gracing the halls of MOD Squad Dental, Dr. Kory Grahl, DMD.
Because of the continuous increase of new patients and MOD Squad Dental never settling for less than 5 star customer service and treatment, Dr. Friedman would like to welcome Dr. Grahl as a new member to our dental family. Dr. Grahl will be accepting new patients as well as seeing our existing patients that would benefit from our new expanding days and/or hours.
Born and raised in San Diego, California, Dr. Grahl graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School with an undergraduate degree from Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Grahl played NCAA Division III Ice Hockey, serving as team captain his Junior and Senior year leading their team to their first playoff victory in 20 years. He then continued on to the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine, finishing top 5 in the class, graduating with honors, Cum Laude, and inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society.
Outside of our dental home, Dr. Grahl enjoys being active in the community with ice hockey, anything outdoors, and looks forward to his upcoming wedding in the summer of 2018 to his beautiful finance’, Rachael.
“With the expansion of our practice, I have been searching for the perfect fit for an associate dentist. Kory exudes the kindness and bedside manner I want my patients to experience when visiting MOD Squad Dental,” Dr. Greg Friedman shared.

We could not wait to share this groom’s new smile. With his upcoming wedding, he is thrilled to be “test driving” his temporary veneers this week. Yes!! They are his TEMPORARY veneers!! He is very tall but has worn his teeth very flat. With these amazing temporary veneers, there is no guessing what his final porcelain veneers will look like. We will be tweaking a couple edges & curves in the finals. We can not wait to share those photos soon. Remember a smile should be like a fingerprint…each different…never the same!

Why Choose Oral Conscious Sedation vs. Nitrous (Laughing Gas)
After one of my patients had their dental procedures completed with Dr. Friedman at MOD Squad Dental under oral conscious sedation, he asked me to write an article to educate others as himself about oral conscious sedation vs. the popular offered Nitrous (Laughing Gas). Lets just say he brought me flowers the next day after conscious sedation & stated on Nitrous at his previous dentist, he felt like he wanted to hide in a corner and very out of control.
It is proven that 92% of dental patients have some form of dental fear or anxiety. This may be a fear of needles, claustrophobia, anxiety of the unknown, previously had to get several injections to get “numb” or the fact that they had a bad past experience and have no idea of the constant changing of dentistry procedures & techniques because of never returning to the dentist.
Oral Conscious Sedation
According to the DOCS, (Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation), only 1% of the dentists in the country are actually qualified in this type of conscious sedation dentistry. Oral conscious sedation is a cocktail of medications that are made into a fine powder & placed underneath the patients tongue. The patient is then asked to relax for 40-50 mins in our sedation suite. A warm blanket, cool eye cover, massage chair & noise cancellation headset create a relaxed & comfortable environment. The great pro of oral conscious sedation is the patient is able to respond to Dr. Friedman requests; open, close, or relax & then return to their sedated comfortable state.
Major benefits of oral conscious sedation;
- It enhances effectiveness of anesthetic.
- No needles.
- Safe; It is considered safer than IV sedation & general anesthesia, with low incidence & severity of adverse reactions
- It decreases gagging.
- It decreases joint and muscle soreness.
- Low cost; MOD Squad Dental & Dr. Greg Friedman offer Oral Conscious Sedation for their patients complimentary with any dental treatment. Dr. Friedman is more concerned about patient comfort vs. “padding your bill.”
- Allows more treatment to be provided in less visits and less time in the chair.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
- Unable to be given gas for an extended period of time compared to oral conscious sedation for long dental visits.
- Harder to control the “comfort zone” for patients to feel relaxed vs. “out of control.”
- Because of the nose being covered, patients who have difficulty breathing through their nose are unable to utilize nitrous oxide.
- If a patient tends to be claustrophobic, the covering of the nose tends to increase this feeling/fear.
- Side Effects may include; increased anxiety, severe nausea, even neurologic problems; Mental confusion is a Nitrous Oxide side effect that is almost never mentioned, yet it happens with more frequency than many would like to admit. This mental confusion occurs as a result of the nitrous oxide causing Vitamin B12 Malabsorption by depleting the Vitamin B12 stored in the body. While most people have plenty of vitamin b12 stored in their liver, those who are at high risk for vitamin b12 deficiency:
- The elderly
- Vegetarians and Vegans
- People with Pernicious Anemia

Think all dentist are the same?
Here at MOD Squad Dental we pride ourselves on always offering the latest technology, equipment, and dental materials. This creates the most comfortable environment and dental procedures our patients know they can count on to be top notch.
I came across this photo of two root canals. The fills (white lines) should run down the tooth root…not out the side of it. You may also see the white line about 2 inches on the tooth to the right. This is a root canal file that has been broken off and left in the bone surrounding this tooth.
We know as dental professionals, 90% of the population do not like visiting the dentist. This is the reason we are determined to change the minds of our patients one visit at a time.
My reason for this post…..We referred a patient to our Endodontist (root canal specialist) for a root canal. I was then asked by his wife why did we refer to a practice that was not “in-network” with their dental insurance. Simple….Or first priority is the patient…We refer to the Endodontist based on that particular doctors expertise, and continued excellent reports of their five star customer service not based on who your insurance may or may not cover.
If you have been told you need some major dental treatment…do your research. It will benefit you in the long run.

Only you & Dr. Friedman will know your in braces…
This patient wanted a straighter, wider smile. As a busy mom & business women she & Dr. Friedman agreed upon Invisalign. Invisalign straightens the teeth with a series of clear aligners worn 24/7. This treatment enables the patient to brush and floss normally and also gives them the freedom of not wearing wires & brackets.
If you are interested in the many options of Invisalign for adults & now teen Invisalign, phone Jess today for your complimentary digital 3-D scan to see if Invisalign is an option for you.
TMJ Pain Correction Story & Our Featured Smile of the Week…
TMJ is the Temporomandibular Joint and often the root of pain for lots of patients. This pain can range form minor popping & clicking of the jaw, to severe pain such as facial soreness, full feeling in the ears, ringing in the ears or even daily migraine headaches.
This particular patient is not the typical TMJ age of 28-45 but only 17. We started TMJ treatment on her about a year and a half ago. She came to MOD Squad complaining of all the severe symptoms mentioned above. As you can see from her before and after photos, her bite was not correctly aligned causing her lower jaw to be canted back into her ear canal causing all of her pain. Her first step in treatment was to place a corrective TMJ orthopedic splint. She wore the splint 24/7 with weekly adjustments. Her pain was quickly alleviated by the splint. Once the patient was pain free and stable for 3 months in this bite position, Dr. Friedman placed her in traditional braces to move her teeth permanently to where the splint was holding her correct bite position. She is now pain free and actually represents that smile on her face both inside and out.
If you or someone you know suffers for TMJ pain, phone Jess today 858-547-0070 for your complimentary consultation.

Shoes are Different Sizes for a Reason…..Update
We saw this gem of a patient again today. We could not wait until the end of her dental journey to post some pictures of her treatment…above is her before treatment photo along with her temporary restorations on the upper 10 teeth. She will be seeing our oral surgeon for placement of 3 implants and then back to Dr. Friedman to place all of her final porcelain restorations.
If you read the beginning of her story, you are aware that this patient was told she needed to have all of her teeth extracted (23 teeth), and dentures placed because of severe decay and bone loss. Her daughter encouraged her to see Dr. Friedman for a second opinion. To make an almost sad story, happy, Dr. Friedman only recommended 3 teeth be extracted and replaced with 3 dental implants, upper and lower porcelain restorations consisting of porcelain crowns and veneers.
As you can clearly see from this beautiful smile, she is over the moon with her results so far and look forward to the end of these procedures and enjoying the quality of life she so deserves.
If you are interested in this or any cosmetic dental procedure and would like an educated opinion of your options, phone Jess today 858-547-0070 to reserve an appointment.
