Think All Dentists Are the Same? Think Again.

April 29, 2015

bad.root.canal Think all dentist are the same?

Think again…

Here at MOD Squad Dental we pride ourselves on always offering the latest technology, equipment, and dental materials.  This creates the most comfortable environment and dental procedures our patients know they can count on to be top notch.

I came across this photo of two root canals.  The fills (white lines) should run down the tooth root…not out the side of it.  You may also see the white line about 2 inches on the tooth to the right.  This is a root canal file that has been broken off and left in the bone surrounding this tooth.

We know as dental professionals, 90% of the population do not like visiting the dentist.  This is the reason we are determined to change the minds of our patients one visit at a time.

My reason for this post…..We referred a patient to our Endodontist (root canal specialist) for a root canal.  I was then asked by his wife why did we refer to a practice that was not “in-network” with their dental insurance.  Simple….Or first priority is the patient…We refer to the Endodontist based on that particular doctors expertise, and continued excellent reports of their five star customer service not based on who your insurance may or may not cover.

If you have been told you need some major dental treatment…do your research.  It will benefit you in the long run.

Smile Pretty with Porcelain Veneers from MOD Squad Dental

March 12, 2015

159289454Smile! You’re on candid camera! Ok, well not really, but if you were, would you smile for the camera or would you try to hide your smile? If you’re one of those smile hiders, then it’s time to do something about that so you can smile with confidence. Porcelain veneers conceal the smile you don’t want to show and reveal a new smile that you wouldn’t think of hiding. Dr. Greg Friedman and his team at MOD Squad Dental have created beautiful smiles for many people in and around San Diego, CA, and they can do the same for you.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers, also called dental veneers, are made of micro-thin layers of dental porcelain or ceramic that are bonded to the facial surface of the teeth in your smile zone. As such, they cover a number of cosmetic smile flaws including teeth that are chipped or slightly cracked; stained or discolored teeth that have not responded to teeth whitening; somewhat crooked teeth; and teeth that have gaps in between them. In addition to covering damaged teeth, veneers also help protect those teeth from further damage.

Porcelain Veneers in San Diego, CA

Once you and Dr. Friedman determine that porcelain veneers are the best cosmetic dentistry option for you, you are on your way to a beautiful new smile. It usually only takes two visits to complete the process of having your veneers placed. At the first appointment, Dr. Friedman will take an impression of your teeth that our dental lab will use to fabricate veneers that are a perfect fit and match for you. Then, he will prep the teeth by removing a minimal amount of enamel, so your veneers will lay flush with the rest of your teeth. After this appointment, you’ll wear temporaries until your permanent veneers are ready. Then, you’ll return to MOD Squad Dental in a few weeks to have your permanent veneers bonded in to place. With your new smile, you’ll be looking for the camera!

Pain-free Numbing with the Wand® at Mod Squad Dental

February 26, 2015

177769009From tooth-colored fillings and root canal therapy to crown preparation and porcelain veneers, there are a number of dental procedures that require local anesthesia. There’s just no getting around it—you have to be numb to have that kind of work done. So, that’s the bad news. The good news, however, is that nowadays when the dentist says, “Okay, we’re going to numb you up now,” it doesn’t have to hurt. With the Wand, Dr. Greg Friedman at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, administers anesthesia effectively and practically painlessly.

The Wand Computer Assisted Anesthesia System allows Dr. Friedman to comfortably inject the minimal amount of anesthesia necessary for a procedure. In this way, the collateral numbness that a patient often feels in the face, tongue and lips can sometimes by eliminated.

Why Does a Shot Hurt?

When you receive any kind of injection, it’s usually not the needle that causes the most pain. Rather, most of the discomfort is due to the pressure and volume of the fluid going into the tissue. The Wand has a microprocessor that automatically compensates for different tissue densities and regulates the delivery of the anesthesia at a level of pressure and volume that’s typically below the threshold of pain.

The computer also provides a flow of anesthetic before the injection. This numbs the site of where the needle will be inserted, so you hardly feel the needle at all. Then, the Wand delivers the anesthetic at a rate of flow that is best for a comfortable injection every time.

Call Our Office Today

Regardless of the kind of dental work you need—restorative or cosmetic—the Wand will make your procedure more comfortable. And not only will you be more comfortable during the appointment, just knowing your treatment will be pain free will decrease any anxiety you may have before you even arrive at our office.  Schedule an appointment today with Dr. Friedman at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA. We also serve patients in Scripps Ranch, Poway and Rancho Pensaquitas.

For a Natural-looking Smile, Choose Dental Implants from Dr. Greg Friedman

February 12, 2015

480753457Although there are other options when it comes to tooth replacement—crown and bridge, partial and full dentures—there really isn’t a more natural choice than dental implants. Unlike your other choices, dental implants replace both the root and crown of a missing tooth. What could be more natural? If you have one or more missing teeth, then consider restoring your smile with dental implants from Dr. Greg Friedman at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA.

Regardless of why you have a missing tooth—severe decay, injury, root canal failure, congenital defect—it’s important to replace that tooth. A missing tooth can cause other oral health problems, including shifting teeth, an improper bite and a greater likelihood of gum disease. Moreover, you may have difficult eating, speaking and smiling freely.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are small posts, usually made of titanium, that are surgically placed into the bone beneath the open socket of your missing tooth. They mimic the root portion of natural teeth and also serve as an anchor for replacement teeth. Dental implants can also be used to secure a full or partial denture, in which case the implants are strategically positioned along the arch. Over time, the bone fuses with the implant, to create a solid foundation for replacement teeth.

At Mod Squad Dental, the surgical portion of the dental implant procedure is performed by Dr. Tina Beck, a periodontist who works at Mod Squad Dental on Fridays. After a few months when you’ve completely healed from surgery, you’ll return to Mod Squad Dental for Dr. Friedman to secure the crown to the post. When finished, you’ll have a natural looking tooth for a natural-looking smile.

TMJ Treatment Review

We are completely honored to receive such a great review and thrilled that this patient shared her TMJ treatment story with social media giving other patients with the same or similar TMJ issues hope.

From our patient;
This review is lengthy, but worth the read. I want people to know the life altering work of Dr. Friedman not only on teeth, but on jaw disorders as well.
April 2003 I was in a pedestrian vs vehicle accident. I, the pedestrian, took out the windsheild with the left back part of my head. Ever since then I struggled with severe jaw, face, head and ear pain known as TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder). At times it affected my ability to speak, eat and function. I watched my mom go thru two horrendous jaw surgeries and refused to do the same. I came to the decision that I would just live in pain for the rest of my life. It was until I was referred to Dr. Friedman that I realized there are other options besides face peeling, jaw breaking surgery. At age 33 Dr. Friedman diagnosed me with an arthritic left jaw joint and possible old undiagnosed injury to the jaw on top of the TMD.
It was decided that treatment would be splint therapy. He was able to lift my jaw off away from bone on bone creating a space where over time tissue would grow and cushion the joint. With in a month I was already relieved of so much pain. As time passed I noticed my jaw structure looking more symmetrical and normal. I can now eat, smile and live with no pain. Words cannot even begin to express how Dr. Friedman has changed my life.
The office holds high standards of cleanliness, is well organized, personable, and runs like a well oiled machine. Dr. Friedman’s wife, Jessica, is amazing! She explains procedures in my terms so I can fully understand both medical and financial ends before anything is done. His life altering work coupled with the above and beyond customer service of the staff makes MOD Squad the total package. You guys are outstanding and deserve endless stars!! —Cara Duke

Protect Your Smile with Under Armour Performance Mouthwear™

November 28, 2014

78377886When an athlete suits up, you can bet they put on protective gear before they wear their team uniform. Whether a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, everyone needs the proper protective equipment. Imagine if some of that protective gear could also improve your athletic performance. That’s exactly what happens with Under Armour Performance Mouthwear. Dr. Greg Friedman at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, is an authorized Under Armour Performance Mouthwear provider, who will not only protect your smile, he’ll improve your game.

What is Mouthwear?

Ordinarily, mouthwear (usually called a mouth guard) is made of a plastic material that is either pre-molded or can be custom made to the exact shape and position of your teeth. All mouth wear is designed to protect your lips, gums, teeth and mouth from injury that may occur while playing sports, both contact and non-contact.

The difference between ordinary mouth guards and Under Armour Performance Mouthwear is that Under Armour’s product is designed to improve athletic performance. Typically, when engaged in competitive sports, athletes clench their teeth, a natural occurrence stemming from our “fight or flight” instinct. The problem is that when you clench your teeth, you signal the body to release cortisol, the stress hormone that can zap your athletic performance.

Under Armour Performance Mouthwear is specially designed to prevent teeth clenching, relieve pressure on your temporomandibular joint and open your airway. The secret is the ArmourBite® Power Wedges™ that sit between your upper and lower molars to maintain an open airway and prevent clenching. Independent studies show that Under Armour Performance Mouthwear works.

Scripps Ranch Root Canal Therapy

October 28, 2014

Scripps Ranch Root Canal Therapy

For most people, the mere thought of a root canal conjures up feelings of discomfort. These feelings, however, pale in comparison to the pain caused when a tooth’s root is infected or succumbing to the effects of severe decay. Then, root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, can be a tremendous relief. At Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, our dentists can perform a painless root canal to save your tooth and leave you pain-free.

Signs and Symptoms of Tooth Root Trouble

Root damage can occur as a result of serious decay, a deep chip or crack in the tooth, or a hard hit to the face. While there are cases when a patient experiences no symptoms to indicate a root canal is necessary, most of the time there are obvious signs and symptoms. These include:

  • Severe tooth pain when chewing, so much so that you may avoid chewing on that side of your mouth
  • Tender and swollen gum tissue around the tooth
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • A change in the tooth’s color, specifically a darker appearance

If any of these symptoms are present, then decay or infection inside the root of a tooth may be indicated. A root canal is the procedure whereby this decay and infection are eliminated. Your dentist at Mod Squad Dental will remove the soft pulp inside your tooth that contains nerve, blood and soft tissue. Once removed, the inside of the root is thoroughly cleaned and sealed from further decay and infection. Usually, the tooth will then need a dental crown for protection.

Schedule an Appointment Today

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, then a root canal may be the solution. Call the office of Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, today. Our dentists and staff are ready to help you with a painless root canal, so you can go about your day pain-free. We conveniently serve patients in Rancho Pensaquitas, Poway, Scripps Ranch and the surrounding areas, too.

Enjoy the Benefits of Straight Teeth with Invisalign® in San Diego, CA

October 14, 2014

invisalignSo, you’ve decided that you want to have straight teeth. Good for you! What you don’t want, however, is the appearance and hassle of metal braces and brackets. Whether you are an adult with a professional reputation to consider or a teen who just plain doesn’t like the look of metal braces, you shouldn’t have to compromise. Not to worry, because with Invisalign aligners from Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, you can have braces that are virtually invisible.

Invisalign aligners are made of clear, PBA-free plastic that fit smoothly and snugly over your teeth. With no sharp wires or brackets, there’s nothing to poke or irritate the inside of your cheeks or your gums. And best of all, Invisalign—as the name implies—are all but invisible to people who see you when you are wearing them.

The Steps to Straight Teeth with Invisalign

First, you and your dentist at Mod Squad Dental will meet to discuss your smile goals and how Invisalign can help. Then, your dentist will develop a treatment plan based on x-rays, pictures and an impression of your teeth. This plan will allow you to see how your teeth will move during the course of treatment and even how your teeth will look when the plan is completed.

Of course, your role in the plan is to wear your custom-designed Invisalign aligners for a majority of the day. You’ll remove them only to eat or to brush and floss your teeth. Approximately every two weeks you’ll begin wearing a new set of aligners. Gradually, as you progress through the sets, you’ll begin to see your teeth move into their proper position. Regular check-ups at Mod Squad Dental will be scheduled, and soon you’ll have the smile you’ve always wanted!

Implant-Retained Dentures in San Diego, CA: Enjoy a Complete Smile with Dental Implants

September 22, 2014

134124545It is no secret that missing teeth negatively impact your daily life, keeping you from enjoying your favorite foods and prompting self-consciousness about your smile. Today’s advanced restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedures make it possible to replace missing teeth in a way far superior to traditional prostheses like removable bridges and dentures. With dental implants, the San Diego, CA team at Mod Squad Dental can effectively secure a full denture to the jaw, promoting a more stable and natural bite.

Implant-Retained Dentures

Like a traditional denture, implant-retained dentures are custom prostheses that are designed to replace missing teeth. A full arch of missing teeth is secured to the jaw by way of dental implants, small titanium posts that are surgically placed within the jaw bone and gum tissue. After a brief period of healing after implant surgery, the custom denture is affixed to these posts. The result is a strong, beautiful smile that frees you from the worry of slipping dentures and discomfort.

Unlike many other general dentists who must send their patients to a different office for implant placement, our team welcomes a local periodontal surgeon into our Scripps Ranch practice so that our patients can continue visiting the office they know and love. Our periodontist, Dr. Tina Beck, is available on Fridays for consultations and the surgical placement of dental implants. We look forward to working with you to ensure a beautiful, healthy, and complete smile that lasts a lifetime.

Reserve Your Visit Today

If you currently wear dentures and you’d like to learn more about how implant-retained dentures can benefit you, we’d like to invite you to contact our office in San Diego, CA today to schedule your dental implant consultation with Dr. Beck and our team. Our cutting-edge technology and patient-centric approach make all the difference in the world when it comes to providing the best dental care for families in Scripps Ranch and the surrounding areas. We also serve Rancho Pensaquitas, Poway, and beyond.
