The American Dental Association recommends everyone visits their dentist at least twice a year for preventive services; however, one-third of adults haven’t had an appointment within the last 12 months. If you’re among those who skip routine cleanings and checkups, you might think you’re saving money by not seeing your dentist until after an issue develops. Unfortunately, you’re actually increasing your oral health expenses. If you’re worried about the cost, you have nothing to fear when using your dental insurance in Scripps Ranch. If you don’t act fast, your insurance benefits will expire. Here are 3 reasons to visit your dentist before 2020 ends to save money.

As an emergency dentist in Scripps Ranch, we are here to help you understand the most common types of dental emergencies and how you should react to each. How you respond to the situation and how quickly you receive dental care has a large impact on the outcome of the emergency. With prompt care, we are often able to prevent additional damage from occurring. As a result, we are likely to be able to restore the tooth’s health and function.

Why Choose Oral Conscious Sedation vs. Nitrous (Laughing Gas)
After one of my patients had their dental procedures completed with Dr. Friedman at MOD Squad Dental under oral conscious sedation, he asked me to write an article to educate others as himself about oral conscious sedation vs. the popular offered Nitrous (Laughing Gas). Lets just say he brought me flowers the next day after conscious sedation & stated on Nitrous at his previous dentist, he felt like he wanted to hide in a corner and very out of control.
It is proven that 92% of dental patients have some form of dental fear or anxiety. This may be a fear of needles, claustrophobia, anxiety of the unknown, previously had to get several injections to get “numb” or the fact that they had a bad past experience and have no idea of the constant changing of dentistry procedures & techniques because of never returning to the dentist.
Oral Conscious Sedation
According to the DOCS, (Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation), only 1% of the dentists in the country are actually qualified in this type of conscious sedation dentistry. Oral conscious sedation is a cocktail of medications that are made into a fine powder & placed underneath the patients tongue. The patient is then asked to relax for 40-50 mins in our sedation suite. A warm blanket, cool eye cover, massage chair & noise cancellation headset create a relaxed & comfortable environment. The great pro of oral conscious sedation is the patient is able to respond to Dr. Friedman requests; open, close, or relax & then return to their sedated comfortable state.
Major benefits of oral conscious sedation;
- It enhances effectiveness of anesthetic.
- No needles.
- Safe; It is considered safer than IV sedation & general anesthesia, with low incidence & severity of adverse reactions
- It decreases gagging.
- It decreases joint and muscle soreness.
- Low cost; MOD Squad Dental & Dr. Greg Friedman offer Oral Conscious Sedation for their patients complimentary with any dental treatment. Dr. Friedman is more concerned about patient comfort vs. “padding your bill.”
- Allows more treatment to be provided in less visits and less time in the chair.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
- Unable to be given gas for an extended period of time compared to oral conscious sedation for long dental visits.
- Harder to control the “comfort zone” for patients to feel relaxed vs. “out of control.”
- Because of the nose being covered, patients who have difficulty breathing through their nose are unable to utilize nitrous oxide.
- If a patient tends to be claustrophobic, the covering of the nose tends to increase this feeling/fear.
- Side Effects may include; increased anxiety, severe nausea, even neurologic problems; Mental confusion is a Nitrous Oxide side effect that is almost never mentioned, yet it happens with more frequency than many would like to admit. This mental confusion occurs as a result of the nitrous oxide causing Vitamin B12 Malabsorption by depleting the Vitamin B12 stored in the body. While most people have plenty of vitamin b12 stored in their liver, those who are at high risk for vitamin b12 deficiency:
- The elderly
- Vegetarians and Vegans
- People with Pernicious Anemia

Think all dentist are the same?
Here at MOD Squad Dental we pride ourselves on always offering the latest technology, equipment, and dental materials. This creates the most comfortable environment and dental procedures our patients know they can count on to be top notch.
I came across this photo of two root canals. The fills (white lines) should run down the tooth root…not out the side of it. You may also see the white line about 2 inches on the tooth to the right. This is a root canal file that has been broken off and left in the bone surrounding this tooth.
We know as dental professionals, 90% of the population do not like visiting the dentist. This is the reason we are determined to change the minds of our patients one visit at a time.
My reason for this post…..We referred a patient to our Endodontist (root canal specialist) for a root canal. I was then asked by his wife why did we refer to a practice that was not “in-network” with their dental insurance. Simple….Or first priority is the patient…We refer to the Endodontist based on that particular doctors expertise, and continued excellent reports of their five star customer service not based on who your insurance may or may not cover.
If you have been told you need some major dental treatment…do your research. It will benefit you in the long run.

Although the thought of having root canal therapy may not be pleasant, the truth of the matter is having a root canal isn’t bad. In fact, if you’re having one of the most common symptoms of an infected tooth—pain—then a root canal can be a welcome relief. And with modern anesthesia and dental technologies, you won’t feel any pain during a procedure designed to leave you pain-free. Dr. Greg Friedman and his staff at MOD Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, are well-practiced in performing gentle root canal therapy so you can save your tooth and your smile.
To understand what a root canal is, let’s first examine the structure of a tooth. The outer layer is called enamel and is the hard, protective shell of each tooth. Next is the dentin, a softer and more sensitive layer. At the core of each tooth is the dental pulp, or soft pulp, where there are nerve and lymph tissues as well as blood vessels. If this soft pulp becomes infected because of severe decay or traumatic injury, then the tooth begins to die. Aside from pain, the symptoms of an infected tooth include a newly discolored tooth, gum and facial swelling, and obvious signs of infection on an x-ray.
Root Canal Therapy at MOD Squad Dental
When you come to MOD Squad Dental for root canal therapy, Dr. Friedman will first make sure you are completely comfortable. There’s no need to be nervous, but if you are, please don’t hesitate to ask about sedation dentistry. The procedure begins with Dr. Friedman accessing the tooth’s dental pulp and removing all signs of infection and any accompanying debris from the pulp chamber as well as the associated root canals. This space is then filled with a biocompatible anti-bacterial material and the tooth is sealed. Dr. Friedman will likely want to protect the tooth with a crown, which will be permanently placed a few weeks after your root canal. In the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary crown.

From tooth-colored fillings and root canal therapy to crown preparation and porcelain veneers, there are a number of dental procedures that require local anesthesia. There’s just no getting around it—you have to be numb to have that kind of work done. So, that’s the bad news. The good news, however, is that nowadays when the dentist says, “Okay, we’re going to numb you up now,” it doesn’t have to hurt. With the Wand, Dr. Greg Friedman at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, administers anesthesia effectively and practically painlessly.
The Wand Computer Assisted Anesthesia System allows Dr. Friedman to comfortably inject the minimal amount of anesthesia necessary for a procedure. In this way, the collateral numbness that a patient often feels in the face, tongue and lips can sometimes by eliminated.
Why Does a Shot Hurt?
When you receive any kind of injection, it’s usually not the needle that causes the most pain. Rather, most of the discomfort is due to the pressure and volume of the fluid going into the tissue. The Wand has a microprocessor that automatically compensates for different tissue densities and regulates the delivery of the anesthesia at a level of pressure and volume that’s typically below the threshold of pain.
The computer also provides a flow of anesthetic before the injection. This numbs the site of where the needle will be inserted, so you hardly feel the needle at all. Then, the Wand delivers the anesthetic at a rate of flow that is best for a comfortable injection every time.

Although there are other options when it comes to tooth replacement—crown and bridge, partial and full dentures—there really isn’t a more natural choice than dental implants. Unlike your other choices, dental implants replace both the root and crown of a missing tooth. What could be more natural? If you have one or more missing teeth, then consider restoring your smile with dental implants from Dr. Greg Friedman at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA.
Regardless of why you have a missing tooth—severe decay, injury, root canal failure, congenital defect—it’s important to replace that tooth. A missing tooth can cause other oral health problems, including shifting teeth, an improper bite and a greater likelihood of gum disease. Moreover, you may have difficult eating, speaking and smiling freely.
What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are small posts, usually made of titanium, that are surgically placed into the bone beneath the open socket of your missing tooth. They mimic the root portion of natural teeth and also serve as an anchor for replacement teeth. Dental implants can also be used to secure a full or partial denture, in which case the implants are strategically positioned along the arch. Over time, the bone fuses with the implant, to create a solid foundation for replacement teeth.
At Mod Squad Dental, the surgical portion of the dental implant procedure is performed by Dr. Tina Beck, a periodontist who works at Mod Squad Dental on Fridays. After a few months when you’ve completely healed from surgery, you’ll return to Mod Squad Dental for Dr. Friedman to secure the crown to the post. When finished, you’ll have a natural looking tooth for a natural-looking smile.
