August 29, 2014

94298352One thing that almost everyone can relate to is having a fear of some kind. For some, they may have a fear of heights, and for others, just the mere sight of a snake is enough to bring them to tears. Though it may seem insignificant to some, there are those that have a crippling fear that they may feel as though they will never overcome. One fear that many people have in common is the fear of the dentist. It may be slight for some, but to others, it can be enough to cause them to delay getting the much needed dental care they need performed. Though you may feel as though there is nothing you can do, Dr. Greg Friedman is able to put your fears to rest using sedation dentistry at his San Diego, CA dental office.

One of the benefits to sedation dentistry is that you are able to restore the health of your smile while feeling completely relaxed. Dr. Friedman is also able to get more work done, saving you time and money. Also, sedation dentistry is able to help those who have a sensitive gag reflex, suffer from TMJ, and people who find it difficult to keep their mouths open for extensive periods of time.

We use oral conscious sedation at our San Diego, CA dental office. You will take the sedation by crushing the pill and mixing it with a flavored mint. The medication takes between 40 to 50 minutes to take effect, where you will feel extremely relaxed. While you are sedated, Dr. Friedman will perform your dental work, and you will not feel any pain. Be sure you have a trusted love one bring you home after your procedure, as the effects of the sedation will still be in your system.

Though many people may not realize it, if you have a smile that has teeth missing, it can result in a greater chance of gum disease, bone loss, tooth loss, and could cause the other teeth in your smile to shift in order to make up for the extra space.

Dr. Beck will have to set up a consultation with you in order to evaluate the state of your smile, your gum tissue health, and your bone density. Welcome Summer with Healthy Gums

June 18, 2014

shutterstock_111358292With summer rapidly approaching, everyone is getting ready and making plans in order to take full advantage of what the season has to offer. Outdoor barbeques, laying out by the pool, and building sand castles are all part of the summer fun, and you want to make sure you have the most fun possible with your friends and family. With the many people you are sure to encounter throughout the summer season, you want to make sure that your smile is as healthy and beautiful as possible. With periodontal disease therapy with Dr. Greg Friedman, you can be sure that your gums, along with your teeth, are in the best condition just in time to soak up some sun!

Periodontal disease affects over 80% of the population, which makes it one of the more common diseases out there. One point that may be shocking is the fact that many people may not even be aware that they are suffering from periodontal disease, leaving their mouths to ongoing infection and deterioration. Some of the most common signs of periodontal disease are swollen gums, gums that bleed when you brush or floss, tenderness, and loose teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to an increased risk in heart disease, stroke, dementia, and much, much more.

Managing your periodontal disease involves scaling and root planing. These procedures allow us to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line. This way, we are able to remove all of the harmful bacteria in areas that your toothbrush and flossing cannot reach, giving you a clear mouth! Depending on the severity of your periodontal disease, laser therapy may be necessary. This involves removing the infected gum tissue so new, healthy gum tissue may grow.  If you are interested in how Dr. Friedman is able to help you with your periodontal disease, make an appointment at our office, and we would be more than happy to help.

Contact our office in Scripps Ranch today and schedule your consultation. We are happy to take care of whatever general, cosmetic, or preventative dental need you may have! We also happily serve patients from Rancho Penasquitas, Poway, throughout San Diego, and beyond.

What You Need to Know About Gum Disease and Pregnancy: Preventive Dentistry in San Diego

April 10, 2014

Shutterstock Perio PregnancyMost people know that gum disease can lead to a variety of dental problems, including bleeding gums, redness, inflammation, and even eventual tooth loss when left untreated. What isn’t common knowledge, however, is how much periodontal disease can affect other areas of the body, particularly in pregnant women. Fortunately, this common disease is relatively easily avoided with routine visits to Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA. Our comprehensive array of preventive and general dentistry services keep your mouth (and your baby) healthy.

Connection Between Gum Disease & Pregnancy

When a woman’s gums are infected, the bacteria there can travel throughout the rest of the body, wreaking havoc on other tissues in a way that isn’t necessarily outwardly noticeable. This bacteria, which is also responsible for the buildup of tartar on the teeth, can cause the uterus to produce excessive amounts of hormonal chemicals known prostaglandins. These are believed to be capable of inducing premature labor, a complication that can be life-threatening for a baby.

Preventing periodontal disease prior to becoming pregnant doesn’t have to be a challenge. Simply follow good oral hygiene habits – including brushing with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing at least once per day – and visit your local Scripps Range family dentist for routine exams and cleanings.

Our Technology

March 16, 2014

dental technologyAs dental technologies change, care gets more comfortable, less invasive, and takes less time to complete. At MOD Squad Dental in San Diego, Dr. Greg Friedman offers exceptional care with many of today’s most advanced tools.

Our technologies include:

  • iTero
  • The Wand
  • Digital radiography and imaging
  • Sedation dentistry
  • Laser dentistry

Have you put off care because of anxiety, conflicts with your schedule, or another reason? Using these tools, we can help you have a completely new kind of dental experience.

Among these tools, two of the most revolutionary are iTero and The Wand. With iTero, we can take digital impressions of your teeth. That means we never have to use the awful-tasting putty that is commonly associated with the impression process. The images captured with iTero are remarkably clear and detailed, and the process is much more comfortable.

The Wand, meanwhile, is changing the way local anesthetic is delivered. A computer controls the process, making the experience more predictable and more comfortable. For many, receiving a local anesthetic is a cause of anxiety, but The Wand changes the experience and removes anxiety from the picture.

Do you have questions about any of our other services? We hope you’ll give us a call. We are located in Scripps Ranch and serve patients from Poway, Rancho Penasquitas, and beyond.

Improve Performance and Protect Your Smile with an Under Armour Mouthguard

February 26, 2014

When you’re out on the field, the basketball court, the baseball diamond, or the soccer field, you want to make sure you’re playing your best. But you also want to make sure you’re smile is protected. Is it possible to do both? The good news is: yes, it is! With a custom-made Under Armour mouthguard from Dr. Friedman, you can protect your teeth and improve your strength, speed, and balance at the same time.

How is that possible?

Because of the unique way Under Armour’s mouthguards work. But first you have to understand how your body reacts to physical exertion.

It’s natural, when you’re participating in your favorite sport, to clench your jaw. However, this simple, natural response triggers the release of a hormone called cortisol, which can make you feel fatigued and distracted. Under Armour mouthguards relieve tension in the jaw by preventing the jaw from clenching. This also prevents the body from releasing cortisol, automatically improving energy levels, stamina, and concentration—in other words, overall performance.

Are you an athlete in the Scripps Ranch area? Dr. Friedman can have a custom-made Under Armour mouthguard ready for you in just two appointments. During the first appointment, our team at Mod Squad Dental will take an impression of your teeth, which only takes about 20 minutes. When you’re done, we’ll send your impression to the Under Armour lab. Your finish appliance will be ready for you to try on in about 10 days.

Are you ready to improve your performance while protecting your smile? Call us today to set up your first appointment. We’re conveniently located in Scripps Ranch and serve patients from Poway, Rancho Penasquitas, and beyond.

What You Should Know About the Connection between Oral and Overall Health

February 15, 2014

oral health and heart healthHow much do you know about the connection between oral and overall health? Most patients don’t even know a connection exists, but it does. Recent data suggests the specific link is gum disease, a common oral health problem affecting a majority of U.S. adults in one form or another.

What causes gum disease is the accumulation of bacteria and plaque around the gum line. As both of these build up, they can cause symptoms like bleeding, tissue loss, and even bad breath. Over time, if enough tissue is lost, pockets will start forming between the teeth and gums. These pockets give the bacteria and plaque of gum disease a way into the body’s bloodstream, and from there to other parts of the body.

The health problems exacerbated by gum disease are wide-ranging. They include:

  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Diabetes
  • Pre-term birth

So how can you protect your smile and your overall health? Dr. Friedman has two suggestions.

First, stick to a good oral health routine. We recommend brushing at least twice a day (or after every meal, if you can), flossing at least once, and gargling with an antibacterial mouthwash. All three of these steps combined will help you control the amount of bacteria in your mouth.

You’ll still need professional help from time to time, though. For our second suggestion, we recommend that patients from the Scripps Ranch area see Dr. Friedman twice a year for checkups and cleanings. During these appointments we can watch for signs of gum disease and help you get rid of bacteria and plaque you might’ve missed at home. We can also put together a personalized treatment plan if we find any signs of gum disease.

Are you struggling with gum disease? Do you need to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Friedman? Call Mod Squad Dental today.  We serve patients from all around the Scripps Ranch area, including Poway and Rancho Penasquitas.
