Although the thought of having root canal therapy may not be pleasant, the truth of the matter is having a root canal isn’t bad. In fact, if you’re having one of the most common symptoms of an infected tooth—pain—then a root canal can be a welcome relief. And with modern anesthesia and dental technologies, you won’t feel any pain during a procedure designed to leave you pain-free. Dr. Greg Friedman and his staff at MOD Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, are well-practiced in performing gentle root canal therapy so you can save your tooth and your smile.
To understand what a root canal is, let’s first examine the structure of a tooth. The outer layer is called enamel and is the hard, protective shell of each tooth. Next is the dentin, a softer and more sensitive layer. At the core of each tooth is the dental pulp, or soft pulp, where there are nerve and lymph tissues as well as blood vessels. If this soft pulp becomes infected because of severe decay or traumatic injury, then the tooth begins to die. Aside from pain, the symptoms of an infected tooth include a newly discolored tooth, gum and facial swelling, and obvious signs of infection on an x-ray.
Root Canal Therapy at MOD Squad Dental
When you come to MOD Squad Dental for root canal therapy, Dr. Friedman will first make sure you are completely comfortable. There’s no need to be nervous, but if you are, please don’t hesitate to ask about sedation dentistry. The procedure begins with Dr. Friedman accessing the tooth’s dental pulp and removing all signs of infection and any accompanying debris from the pulp chamber as well as the associated root canals. This space is then filled with a biocompatible anti-bacterial material and the tooth is sealed. Dr. Friedman will likely want to protect the tooth with a crown, which will be permanently placed a few weeks after your root canal. In the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary crown.

Scripps Ranch Root Canal Therapy
For most people, the mere thought of a root canal conjures up feelings of discomfort. These feelings, however, pale in comparison to the pain caused when a tooth’s root is infected or succumbing to the effects of severe decay. Then, root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, can be a tremendous relief. At Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, CA, our dentists can perform a painless root canal to save your tooth and leave you pain-free.
Signs and Symptoms of Tooth Root Trouble
Root damage can occur as a result of serious decay, a deep chip or crack in the tooth, or a hard hit to the face. While there are cases when a patient experiences no symptoms to indicate a root canal is necessary, most of the time there are obvious signs and symptoms. These include:
- Severe tooth pain when chewing, so much so that you may avoid chewing on that side of your mouth
- Tender and swollen gum tissue around the tooth
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
- A change in the tooth’s color, specifically a darker appearance
If any of these symptoms are present, then decay or infection inside the root of a tooth may be indicated. A root canal is the procedure whereby this decay and infection are eliminated. Your dentist at Mod Squad Dental will remove the soft pulp inside your tooth that contains nerve, blood and soft tissue. Once removed, the inside of the root is thoroughly cleaned and sealed from further decay and infection. Usually, the tooth will then need a dental crown for protection.

The word endodontics might not sound familiar to you, but you’ll recognize the alternate name for it: root canal therapy. Many patients feel anxious when they hear they need a root canal, but with today’s technology and techniques, treatment is more comfortable than many realize. And at Mod Squad Dental in San Diego, we take special precautions to ensure that our patients feel comfortable and relaxed.
But first, you might be wondering why a root canal (or endodontics) is necessary. In many cases, it’s because of a bacterial infection that has developed inside the tooth due to a deep cavity, a crack, or an injury. Such an infection can cause painful symptoms, like sensitivity to hot and cold. If treatment isn’t administered, the tooth may be lost, but with a root canal, the tooth can be saved and your oral health restored.
During an endodontic procedure, Dr. Friedman will remove the damaged pulp from inside your tooth. This pulp is what makes up the tooth’s nerve. Then, after the pulp has been removed and the interior of the tooth has been cleaned, it will be sealed with a special substance and capped with a custom-made crown to protect it for the future.
Are you worried that you might need a root canal? Dr. Friedman would be happy to help you with a consultation appointment at his San Diego dental office.
Call us today to reserve a visit. During your appointment, we’ll complete an oral health assessment and propose a treatment plan designed just for you. We serve patients from San Diego and beyond.
